Solutions Engineer - North America
Overview
We are seeking a Solution Engineer who is, first and foremost, a Commerce Expert. You will serve as the technical face of our Sales team, acting as a consultant for $100M+ GMV brands. This isn't just a sales role; it requires a deep, architectural understanding of the Shopify Plus ecosystem and the ability to translate complex commerce requirements into high-value business solutions. You are the "Technical Closer" who ensures that what we promise in the pitch is strategically sound, technically buildable, and commercially viable.
Responsibilities
The below list represents the major tasks assigned to incumbents in this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all tasks.
- Lead Commerce Discovery: Partner with the Sales team to conduct high-intensity technical discovery, identifying a merchant's deep-seated pain points and translating them into technical requirements that support the overall sales strategy.
- Architect Proof of Value: Build and present custom Shopify demos that prove technical viability for complex needs like B2B, Markets Pro, and custom Shopify Functions.
- Ecosystem Validation: Partner with Solution Architects to validate that proposed integrations (ERP, 3PL, PIM, and Middleware) align with the merchant’s enterprise architecture.
- Technical Sales Strategy: Identify "The Why" behind a technical transition—moving beyond features to explain the ROI of a more robust commerce infrastructure.
- Delivery Context Handoff: Ensure a seamless delivery transition by briefing Business Analysts and Architects on the commerce vision, ensuring the "Innovation" sold is exactly what gets delivered.
- Commercial Risk Assessment: Lead initial project scoping and "T-shirt sizing," identifying technical risks in the commerce stack that could impact budget or delivery timelines.
What do you need to be successful? (Commerce Expertise)
- Enterprise Platform Mastery: Expert-level knowledge of Shopify Plus is mandatory, including deep familiarity with Shopify Functions, B2B, and complex checkout extensibility.
- Commerce Ecosystem Depth: Expert-level understanding of how commerce platforms interact with the broader enterprise stack: ERPs (NetSuite, SAP), Middleware (Mulesoft, Workato), and Headless/Composable frameworks.
- Market Insight: Ability to advise merchants on international expansion (Global-E, Markets Pro), omnichannel strategy, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) modeling.
- Consultative Approach: Experience commanding a room of C-suite stakeholders at $100M+ brands, balancing the technical requirements of a CTO with the growth goals of a CMO.
- Conflict Resolution: Ability to navigate the tension between "out of the box" platform features and the highly custom requirements of enterprise-scale merchants.
Soft Skills
- Strategic Problem-Solving: Ability to analyze fragmented commerce data and requirements to find a balanced, logical path forward.
- Technical Communication: Excellent ability to simplify complex technical architecture into compelling value propositions for non-technical stakeholders.
- Organizational Agility: Ability to manage multiple high-stakes sales cycles simultaneously while maintaining precision in technical documentation.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in technical sales, solution architecture, or engineering, specifically within the eCommerce industry.
- Proven track record of success with Shopify Plus, including deep technical knowledge of Shopify Functions & APIs, B2B, and checkout extensibility.
- Demonstrated experience acting as a "Technical Closer," with the ability to lead high-intensity discovery sessions and architect Proof of Value for $100M+ GMV brands.
- Exceptional communication skills across written, verbal, and collaborative formats
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day operational execution
